Books & Tapes

For books, tapes and web site info that I use in my classes go to Resources

Yoga

For beginners I like to recommend books and tapes that have really good instructions. But I also caution beginners to take a class with a good teacher (check credentials!) and get some help with material in books and tapes. Until you have a fair amount of experience, it is NOT a good idea to try postures from books or tapes without some pointers from a teacher. That said, here are some of my faves (if any of the boxes just have generic amazon info instead of the book, click "refresh" a time or two):

This is a very easygoing presentation
of the postures:

I love this one and it's so simple and easy I'd almost
recommend it to beginners.  And yet even for those with experience,
it gently works whole body.

This one's a little more advanced but photos and explanations are good as is info about chakras:

This videotape is so simple, so
well explained that even a beginner
can follow along (though I still
recommend help from a teacher. Really excellent!

Lilias is often very accessible for
beginners and this tape is very good:

We used this as our text in my yoga teacher training.
There's a lot of great information about kriya yoga including general philosophy,
cleansing techniques, breathing practices
and meditations
as well as a very nice array of postures with thorough explanations:

METAPHYSICS

The first book on metaphysics that I read
has remained the most influential one
for me.  I thought the world made sense
for the first time.

The autobiography of the man who
brought Kriya Yoga to the U.S. is
a must read:
